What is Routt County Habitat for Humanity?
-
We are a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. We are located in Steamboat Springs, Colorado and serve all of Routt County. Our phone number is 970-871-6101.
-
Are Habitat Homes Free?
-
No. Habitat is a "hands up" and not a "hand out." Each homeowner must be willing to devote many hours to building their home, their neighbor's home or to other Habitat projects. Habitat homes are sold at no profit, with a 30-year zero interest loan from Habitat.
-
What are specifications of a typical home?
-
A Habitat home is simple, well-built and energy efficient, but with few extras. All homes include a washer and dryer, refrigerator/freezer and stove/oven. Most of the homes we have built to date have been duplexes. The size is typically 1000 to 1200 square feet but depends on the number of bedrooms.
-
How long does it take to receive a home?
-
The application process takes approximately 30-90 days. Once construction begins it could take anywhere from 12 to 24 months to complete the unit. Habitat is a long term solution to a housing need.
-
How does Habitat determine number of bedrooms?
-
Habitat assumes two children of the same sex per bedroom, regardless of age difference, unless there are documented medical reasons for separate bedrooms. Therefore, a family of four (two adults, two daughters) would qualify for a two bedroom. A family of four (two adults, one son and one daughter) would qualify for a three bedroom.
-
What choices can be made by homeowner for their new home?
-
Depending on the site and type of home, homeowners may be able to choose from selected combinations of exterior and interior colors, floor coverings, counter tops and window coverings.
-
Can a homeowner sell their home?
-
Yes, homeowners can sell their Habitat home at any time. However, there are often restrictions on resale value and/or permanent affordability covenants. There is also a profit sharing clause that requires that any profit made from the re-sale of a Habitat home within 30 years of purchase must be shared with Habitat.
-
How can I apply for a home?
-
Call our office and we will have our Family Selection Committee send you an application. Please note that we only take applications when we expect to be able to begin building a home for the selected family within 12 months of being selected.
